Disney Planes Wing Control Dusty Crophopper Radio Control Plane Review
The first thing you need to be clear about when considering this Dusty Crophopper RC plane for your kids is that it does NOT fly in the air. You might want to explain this to your child even before he opens the box, so he’s not disappointed. What it does do, is roll along on the ground like a radio control car but with the added feature that it will tilt its wings left and right as if it was flying.
Even better, when a child wears the two controllers on his hands it can sense what he is doing and copy the same movements – within limits. Basically it will tilt to one side or the other as it rolls along, the way a child does when he’s running around the room pretending to fly.
The small controls will perfectly fit to the small hands of young children so that they won’t have any difficulty using it, but we think it’s best for kids around 5 rather than the 3-10 age range that the manufacturers suggest. Dusty even has the capability of calling out flying commands such as “Bank Left!” and then your child and the toy can do the action together.
The propeller of the plane will start spinning when it moves forward and there are 3 built-in programmed moves that your child will be able to perform through just a touch of a button. The spinning propeller will not go fast enough to alarm or hurt your child even if it is grabbed.
Dusty’s voice is very recognizable and clear which is great especially for the fans of the popular Disney movie. Parents may find it a little loud and one reviewer suggested putting tape over the speaker to muffle it, which apparently works well!
You’ll need a large space with a flat surface for Dusty to move around on. He will bump into furniture and he works best on solid floors or outside on a flat hard surface in the yard – not grass or thick carpet. A low pile carpet may be okay but not as good as a wooden floor or other solid surface.
It requires 2 AAA and 4 AA batteries to power Dusty, for the two controllers and the vehicle itself. Batteries are not included but these are standard sizes that you probably have in the house. On the positive side, there’s an auto shut-off to turn off the power and save battery life when kids stop playing. This is great because how many kids ever think to turn something off?
The bottom line of this Dusty Crophopper RC plane review is that your child will definitely have fun playing with it but it’s best in a big room with a solid floor. All in all, this is definitely a great toy for a medium priced budget especially for the fans of the movie but also any kid who loves planes and other vehicles.
