Our rating: 4 stars for age 8+
2 stars for age 4-7

The teenage mutant ninja turtles are back and they have a massive new lair in the sewers!

This is a fantastic toy for kids who like assembling models and playing with intricate toys with many pieces. As you’ll see from our rating, we think it’s a great toy for the right child but while the manufacturers are promoting it for kids from age 4 up, we think it’s better for over 8s. Read on to find out why.

What’s Great About The TMNT Secret Sewer Lair

The Secret Sewer Lair is a huge playset that will give kids the chance to enact Ninja battles in action. It’s modeled on the Sewer Lair from the TV show, so kids will recognize a lot of the parts and features.

There are tons of possibilities for play. There’s a rope swing and dropdown ladders so the Turtles can storm up and down the building to join in with battles. There’s also an elevator in the back of the building. The zip line can attach to other objects in the kid’s room so Ninja Turtles can zoom to and from the Lair.

There’s a punchbag model of Shredder, the Turtles’ enemy, for them to practice their battle skills on. Donatello has his computer lab. Doors open and close, and the floors collapse under enemies. There are other defenses too, like an ooze drain to shower muck on any enemies who attack from the outside.

What’s Not So Great

As I’ve already said, we don’t think this toy is the best choice for under 8’s. It’s too complex and fragile. If you get this for a small child you’ll be building it yourself and he’ll find it frustrating because the pieces are not sturdy enough for little hands to play with without it coming apart.

On the other hand, if you have, say, one boy aged 10 and another aged 6 and they get along well (if you’re that lucky!) you could get the Secret Sewer Lair for the two of them. The older one would do most of the assembly and the younger one could help with stickers and such, and play with it when it’s done.

I guess also it would be nice to get the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures with the Lair. But a lot of kids getting this playset are already going to have the figures, and if you already have them you don’t need them twice over, so that’s probably why they’re not included. Of course you can buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figures separately. The 4-5 inch (around 12 cm) size figures will fit the Secret Sewer Lair best.

Our rating: 4 stars for age 8+
2 stars for age 4-7

A stunning playset with tons of scope for imaginative play for kids age 8+ who will enjoy assembling it and then have fun playing with what they have built.
